I love coffee. Hot or iced. And I love coffee specialty drinks. Pumpkin spice on a nice fall day or an iced mocha on a summer drive are my favorite go-to options. But the costs of those add up quickly. I’m always looking for ways to cut costs while still being able to indulge once in a while. Here are some yummy and budget friendly ways you can spice up your morning coffee at home without breaking the bank and using your drip coffee maker.
Spiced Coffee
Add your favorite spice to the coffee grounds before brewing. Our favorites are cinnamon, apple pie spice and pumpkin spice. Mix it up! Spice up your morning with one of our Magic Mugs.
Café Au Lait
Use equal parts coffee to steamed milk. Cook the milk over medium heat. Whisk the milk as it warms to create a froth with a balloon whisk. Or, if you have one, use a milk frother while the milk heats up.
Spiced Latte
1 1/3 cups milk of choice
2 tablespoons pumpkin spice
4 teaspoons of sugar
Whipped cream, optional
In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients. Cook over medium heat, stirring so the milk does not become scalded on the bottom. When heated through, remove from heat. Divide mixture between 4 mugs. Add hot coffee and stir. Add whipped cream, if desired
Alternatives: whip hot milk mixture in a blender until frothy. Add honey to taste to milk mixture before heating.
Macchiato
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon caramel sauce
Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature so you don’t chill the coffee as you add them. Add ice for an iced Macchiato
Alternative: make it skinny with sugar free syrup and half and half or milk. Add vanilla for an extra touch.
Mocha
4 tablespoons of chocolate shavings or cocoa powder
½ cup milk
Over medium heat, heat the milk and chocolate until chocolate is melted. Pour into hot coffee.
Alternative: use chocolate syrup instead of the milk for an extra indulgent cup
